Maybe you didn’t know it, but America’s first certified organic restaurant was opened right here in Washington. Restaurant Nora near Dupont Circle has been serving certified organic meals since April 1999.
The building that is home to Restaurant Nora was originally built in the 19th century for use as a grocery store. Some elements of the original building have been artistically retained and “museum quality antique” quilts from the era decorate the inside. The restaurant features a wine cellar, garden room, gallery and parlor for unique seating venues.
As for the organic cuisine, in April of 1999 Restaurant Nora became America’s first certified organic restaurant, meaning 95% or more of everything on the menu was produced by certified organic growers and farmers who incorporate sustainable methods into their agriculture. Meat comes from grass-fed, free-range animals while cheeses are hand-made and vegetables are freshly picked.
The prices are high, with entrees ranging from $26 to $34. There is a four-course tasting menu available for $70. To make reservations or learn more about Nora’s, visit their website or call 202-462-5143
