Cherry Blossoms, Kites and Eco-Education

Kite FestivalIt’s impossible not to know that our famous cherry blossoms are in bloom. The number of tourists wandering aimlessly has increased and color has returned to the gray Washington streets.

This weekend’s weather might be a little bi-polar, but there should be a few opportunities to sneak down to the Mall and participate in the cherry blossom festivities.

One activity you can’t miss is the Smithsonian’s Kite Festival on Saturday from 10 AM – 4 PM. The site of hundreds of amateur and professional kites filling the sky near the Washington Monument is a must see. If you have a kite, bring it down and see it fly alongside amazing kites from around the world.

This year, the Smithsonian is mixing kite flying and environmental education. The theme for the kite festival is exploring natural resources all around us. Kids are encouraged to make creative kites from recycled products from home like cloth and paper. The Smithsonian will have activities and speakers who will talk about recycling, conservation and the future of wind energy.

Grab a blanket and go down to the Mall this weekend to learn about natural resources while you appreciate the blooming cherry blossoms and a sky full of kites. Learn more about the Smithsonian’s kite festival on their website.
