Green Business Reviews
Here at City Renewed we love Yelp. It’s a great site that helps you find great local businesses to support. So we were tickled by this week’s green newsletter.
Faerie folk and shamrocks have nothing on our tree-hugging fellow yelpers, ’cause here in the District, we know it doesn’t have to be St. Patrick’s Day to go green. In the spirit of this glorious Irish holiday, we’re raising a frothy pint this week to all things green — read on… it won’t even cost you a pot o’ gold.
Ready to make the switch from being buried underground in the Metro to the freedom of personal pedal power? Simply gear up for local locomotion at your friendly neighborhood bike shop. Aisha M did just that with a trip to Revolution Cycles, and she even took a test-spin across Key Bridge to try out a few models! Andrew M racks up his fixes at The Bike Rack, where he’s found “a cheaper, more relaxed place” for a quick repair than anywhere else. But for serious cyclists, Monica L has spoken: “When I decided that I wanted one specific bike and nothing else would possibly do, City Bikes went out of their way to find it and special order it for me.”
Eating organic doesn’t mean having to grow your own hydroponics. Patrick H scarfs savory free-range organic chicken at “eco-friendly and sustainable-minded” Chix. With a composting program and biodegradable cutlery, they clearly have green on the brain. Loren A is a self-admitted “organic food freak” and heartily recommends Coppi’s Organic pizza, good enough even to “remind her of her days in Venice, Italy.” Meanwhile, eco-conscious pescetarians can count on BlackSalt Fish Market, known for their sustainable fishing practices; Rowena E celebrated her anniversary there, reporting that her “food was excellent and super fresh and the service was incredible.” Delicious and environmentally friendly? That’s sure to leave a good taste in anyone’s mouth.
Speaking of green, save yourself some while buying local at an area organic grocer. Maria P gives us the breakdown on the kaleidoscope of products available at Glut Food Co-Op in Mt. Rainier: “They carry local milk from Trickling Springs Creamery, local bulk organic tofu from Twin Oaks, local produce from Tuscarora Organic Growers, and baked goods from Firehook.” Similarly, at the Takoma Park-Silver Spring Food Co-Op, Cyrus N does a little jig for the bountiful variety, also quipping that “it’s a hippie paradise… the cashier even had that silly chinbeard thing hippies had in the ’90s.” Hey Cyrus, you sure that wasn’t a leprechaun?
