If you are looking for ways to save serious money, consider switching to public transportation. A report recently released by the American Public Transportation Association claims that Washingtonians who choose public transportation rather than driving around the metro area can save up to $9,530/year or $794/month.

These savings represent the 8th highest possible savings in the nation, based on March 5th gas prices and 2008 parking rates. Nationally, drivers can save $8,498/year by utilizing public transportation.

The top 10 cities for annual savings through public transportation are:

  1. Boston — $12,428
  2. New York — $12,390
  3. San Francisco — $11,516
  4. Chicago — $10,497
  5. Philadelphia — $10,333
  6. Seattle — $10,274
  7. Honolulu — $10,033
  8. D.C. — $9,530
  9. San Diego — $9,260
  10. Minneapolis — $9,198
