Dupont Gets Two New Green Restaurants

GreenDupont Circle is home to America’s first organic restaurant, now that eco-tradition is expanding to two more green restaurants.

Sweetgreen, a salad and frozen yogurt shop, opened its second location in Dupont yesterday. The original Sweetgreen was opened in Georgetown by some G-town alum. In addition to combining two healthy treats under one roof, Sweetgreen sets itself apart by using biodegradable and compostable utensils and packaging. The company is certified “green” by the Green Restaurant Association and runs off of 100% wind energy. Best of all, if you eat a lot of salads, Sweetgreen offers resusable salad bowls that will get you one free veggie topping each time you use it. Check out the Sweetgreen website and stop by the new Dupont location at 1512 Connecticut Ave. NW.

The next big green restaurant coming to Dupont is Java Green’s “Cafe Green.” This new shop is located on 17th street near the Dunkin’ Donuts. Java Green has become well known in the DC-area since the opening of its first restaurant at 1020 19th St. NW. They offer nearly all organic food, from organic fruits to organic soy sauce. The restaurant supports fair trade farming by purchasing coffee, tea, bananas, cocoa powder and more from small farmers. The utensils at Java Green are all either reusable or biodegradble and the shop is run on wind power. No word yet when the new Cafe Green on 17th will open. Check out the Java Green website for more info.

FINALLY!!! A "green" restaurant gets it! So many supposedly green food places have just stacks of plastic utensils and take out stuff, INCLUDING Java Green. But this one sounds like the real deal.

"The utensils at Java Green are all either reusable or biodegradble and the shop is run on wind power." I don't think so. At the one downtown, they had plastic utensils. Now, does that qualify as "reusable?"

The real solution to all of this will inevitably involve more labor: chinaware and silverware.
  • I think Java Cafe went all biodegradable earlier this year, maybe their stores in Boston if I"m not mistaken...
