Get Gay Married the Green Way in Stamford

Stamford!

Stamford!

There has been a lot of gay marriage excitement in the news lately. A few weeks ago, Iowa’s Supreme Court unanimously approved gay marriages in the state. Just this week, Vermont’s legislature passed a gay marriage law with a veto-proof majority. Now, DC’s council has approved a measure that would allow same-sex couples with marriage licenses from other states to register as married couples in the District.

It’s no secret that DC has a large gay population. With this new law, possibly thousands of couples could be heading for the airport to find a state that will marry them so they can bring their certificate back to the District. Before you book the next plane to Massachusetts, here are some tips to make sure your gay marriage is green as can be.

First, if you’re simply interested in obtaining a marriage certificate from a state that allows gay marriages, pick the closest one to save on fuel and money. Connecticut is by far your best choice.  To be specific, Stamford, Connecticut is only 268 miles from DC.

Second, avoid the impulse to fly or drive and take the train instead. Trains are by far the lowest carbon emitters. Amtrak’s Northeast Regional route will take you from DC to Stamford in just about four and a half hours. Tickets run around $72 each way.

Third, while you’re in Stamford, celebrate your nuptials with a delicious organic/locally grown dinner at the elegant Napa & Co. restaurant. Located in downtown Stamford, less than a mile from the train station, this gourmet place serves meats and vegetables grown right there in Connecticut.

What are the requirements for getting married in Connecticut?

  1. You have to be 18, not married to someone else and not blood related to your future spouse.
  2. You have to have an Officiant who will perform the vows. Any member of clergy or justice of the peace can do this. If you’re choosing Stamford you’re in luck! There is a Unitarian Universalist Church only 0.8 miles from the train station. They will perform the vows, their number is (203) 348-0708
  3. For the paper work  you will need a photo id (driver’s license or passport), your social security number, mother’s maiden name, your parent’s birthplaces, date and location of your wedding, contact info for wedding officiant.
  4. Go to a town hall and fill out a marriage application. You need to go to the town hall where  you intend to have the ceremony. Stamford’s Town Hall is located at 888 Washington Blvd., right by the train station!
  5. Pay the $30 fee.

That’s it! You’re married. Now come back to DC and fill out whatever paperwork they’ll require. Congratulations!
