Man Swimming to Washington DC from Massachusetts

dscn1474There a lot of ways to travel between Massachusetts and Washington DC. Many people fly or take the train, but now forty year-old Christopher Swain is adding a new method of travel, swimming.

On April 22, Swain jumped into the Atlantic to begin his epic journey. A group of friends, family, and media saw him off on Wednesday. Swain is hoping that his trip will raise awareness and concern for the state of the world’s oceans.

The self-proclaimed “Ordinary Guy” and father of two, plans to swim from Marblehead, Massachusetts over a 1,000 miles down the eastern seaboard and up the Potomac river to Washington DC. Along the way, he’ll interact with thousands of school children to ignite their passion for the ocean.

The trip will not be easy and will be wrought with obstacles. In the past, Swain has battled whitewater rapids, raw sewage, boats and even toxic algae. The biggest dangers on his trip to DC are probably weather related. When asked about sharks, Swain admits that the possibility of an encounter are very small and emphasizes that shark attacks are extremely rare. In fact, Swain even goes on to say, “I’d be lucky to see any big sharks at all.”

The timing of his arrival in Washington DC is still undetermined, as the role of weather and a variety of other factors will have a major impact on his schedule.
