Metro Adds New Cars to Green & Red Lines

269475984_5acb24ee07Starting Monday, Metro will have 850 rail cars in service during morning and afternoon rush service. This is the first time Metro has run so many cars at once. The new rail car additions will be made to the red and green line where 6 car trains will be expanded to 8 car trains.

WMATA claims that upgrades to its 66 power substations allowed for the addition of more 8 car trains in the system. Expanding the number of cars on each train was part of WMATA’s strategy to manage crowds during the inauguration.

The Metro system has experienced a steady growth of ridership over the last year with more than 724,000 trips being made during weekdays in February of this year. WMATA is predicting the addition of even more rail cars in the coming months.
