Living Without Screen on the Green

There are some passionate people in DC working to ensure that Screen on the Green returns this summer. But in case their efforts (and the Facebook groups) fail to bring our favorite summer outdoor activity back to the National Mall, you should have a back-up plan.
DCist.com went through all the hard work and effort to organize a list of outdoor movie opportunities around the DC metro area that haven’t been cancelled. Some of them are just lame, while others actually seem quite interesting. I’m going to highlight a few below. To see the full list from DCist, click HERE.
- NoMa Summer Screen: This outdoor movie series will focus on music-themed films like No Direction Home and Ray. Every Wednesday starting June 10 at the New York Avenue Metro station.
- “I ♥ the ’80s” Rosslyn Outdoor Film Festival: This festival has already started. Each film is shown at the Gateway Park in Rosslyn at Dusk. Tonight’s movie is 16 Candles. Other 1980’s movies being shown this year include: Short Circuit, ET and Pretty in Pink.
- Divas Outdoors at the Hillwood Museum: Anyone with a passion for screen divas (straight people included) can check out these cult classics at the Hillwood Museum. Admission is $15 but that includes entrance to the museum’s exhibits. The next film, That Touch of Mink, is scheduled for Friday, May 29th. There will be a contest for best picnic spread plus beer, wine and snacks are available for sale at the museum.
- DPR’s Family Movie Night Series: DCist hasn’t confirmed the Department of Parks & Recreation’s film festival yet, but it is an annual event hosted at parks all over town. If we get any information on it, we’ll update this post.
- Riverfront Reel: There must be a lot of 1980’s nostalgia in the air, as the movies showing at the Plaza behind the U.S. Dept of Transportation at New Jersey & Tingey St. SE are all 80’s fare. You can catch the flicks on Wednesday nights at 8:45pm.
Take these opportunities to get outside and enjoy the beautiful summer weather. It beats sitting inside with the A/C cranked up for three months.
