Arlington Taxis Becoming More Fuel Efficient

If you read our post on the new enviroCABs in DC, you might remember that the Ford Crown Victorias most cab drivers use are incredibly fuel inefficient. On average, a Crown Vic gets just 16 miles per gallon in the city.
While enviroCAB takes responsibility for its carbon footprint, most cab companies don’t, so Arlington is forcing their hand a little with new fuel efficiency standards for taxi cabs.
Arlington County has passed new taxi regulations that require cabs to get 26 miles per gallon by July 1, 2010. Ten years later, in 2020, cabs will be required to get 35 miles per gallon. The new regulations require that taxi companies abide by federal standards, if they are more strict than county regulations, but they do give the companies two extra years to adjust.
