A green roof is a great use of the space on top of your building. They create a little habitat for migrating birds, absorb stormwater, prevent “heat islands” and keep your building cool. You can learn more about green roofs on the District Department of the Environment’s website.
DC wants to encourage property owners to install green roofs, so they’ve created the green roof subsidy program. Qualifying property owners can recieve a $5 per square foot grant from the District Department of the Environment, up to $20,000. The project must cover at least 50% of the building’s roof and be 4,000 square feet or less.
This is an incredible opportunity to get some extra cash to make valuable changes to your property that will reduce your energy bills and help our local environment.
To apply for the program, you must submit an application to DC Greenworks, a local non-profit. Money is distributed on a first-come, first-serve basis.
Learn more about the program on DDOE’s website.
