DC to Use 50% Renewable Energy

3326840572_4933b6ed78The District Department of the Environment is on the verge of entering an agreement to buy 50% of its electricity supply from renewable sources. The three-year contract represents a five-fold increase in the amount of renewable electricity purchased by the District.

The sources of renewable energy will include wind, geothermal, solar and hydroelectric. This purchase will increase investment in new energy technologies and will greatly reduce the overall carbon footprint of the District. Furthermore, the government anticipates saving $44 million dollars over the term of the contract when compared to current published rates.
