Digital TV Transition – E-Recycle Your Old TV

The day has FINALLY arrived! Analog broadcast signals have officially been switched to digital signals. We can all finally be relieved of the endless commercials warning us of impending television doom.
If you decided to buy a new TV with an internal digital receiver rather than purchase a converter box, make sure you dispose of your old TV properly. One of the worst side-effects of this signal transition is the massive number of aging televisions ending up in America’s dumps, leaking toxic metals into the ground and our water supplies.
The DC government offers two electronic recycling sites where you can dump your old TV for free. The first is the Benning Road Trash Transfer Station at 3200 Benning Road, NE. The second is the Ft. Totten Trash Transfer Station at 4900 Bates Road, NE. Both sites are open on Saturdays from 8am to 3pm.
Not only will these sites accept your old TV’s, they’ll also happily accept all other hazardous waste and electronics. The District Department of Public Works has written a FAQ document on hazardous waste to answer any questions you might have on dumping these types of products.
