The first lady’s garden on the White House lawn has come to life with lots of healthy, fresh vegetables. Yesterday, a group of students from DC’s own Bancroft Elementary School joined Michelle Obama for a few hours of harvesting.
The students pulled over 70 pounds of lettuce, 12 pounds of snap peas and a cucumber from the garden. Other vegetables in the garden include beans, kale, collard greens, broccoli and chard.
In addition to helping in the garden, the students also worked in the White House kitchen, preparing breaded chicken, shelled peas, chopped onions and washed lettuce.
The White house garden is totally organic and uses no fertilizers or pesticides. Chesapeake Bay crab meat, green sand compost and lime powder are used to help the vegetables grow and avoid pests.
After working in the garden and prepping the vegetables for lunch, the students and the First Lady enjoyed a freshly harvested and cooked meal in the White House. Many of the produce from the garden was also donated to Miriam Kitchen for the homeless.
