What is Integrated Pest Management?

3370335606_f77875845fI had never heard of Integrated Pest Management (IPM) until my condo building starting discussing it as an option. Of course I knew that spraying poisons all over my home to kill bugs was a bad idea, especially with a dog. But I didn’t know someone had come up with a workable solution to controlling pests without toxic chemicals.

Friends of Rock Creek’s Environment recommends using IPM to manage insects because many bug killing chemicals end up in Rock Creek, creating a toxic stew that runs right through our city. They describe IPM this way…“Integrated pest management (IPM) is a holistic approach to pest control that uses biological or mechanical controls rather than relying on toxic chemicals.”

The IPM approach is divided into three steps: prevention, observation and intervention.

The first step, prevention, is the easiest and most effective. Keeping your home clean and free of food crumbs or waste will make it less inviting for pests. Don’t leave food out and make sure packaging is well sealed.

Next, observe where pests are coming from. Most of us know of those dark, damp corners of our homes that make great hiding spots for bugs. Clean out these spots and seal any cracks or holes that might provide access to pests. Make sure your windows have screens and are closed tight when you’re not around. Put a seal along the garage door bottom and along any outside access doors.

Finally, if bugs have managed to sneak into your home or yard, intervene using organic and natural repellants to chase them away. A number of natural oils, fruits, etc. can be used to kill or discourage insects. This site has a great list of available products. A quick Google search will bring up some homemade remedies as well.

Before you call your bug man to exterminate your pests, think about using Integrated Pest Management. IPM is the green alternative that will protect your kids, pets, food and environment.
