This one is for Simone.
Few DC residents have big beautiful yards to garden in, but that doesn’t mean you have to suppress your green thumb. All across the Metro-DC area, there are community gardens for locals to nurture and cultivate their own little piece of ground.
Community gardens are pieces of land set aside and divided up for communal gardening. The process by which you reserve a space in a community garden can vary from garden to garden. Most DC community gardens have waiting lists, but there are new ones sprouting up on a regular basis.
The best source of information on DC’s community gardens is Washington Gardener magazine. They have information on the locations of local community gardens and how to start your own.
Washington Gardener created a pdf file of all the DC community gardens, you can open it from HERE. The parks are located all around town in Kalorama, Brookland, Eastern Market, Takoma Park, etc. Washington Gardener also lists community gardens in Virginia & Maryland on their website.
If you enjoy gardening, but you don’t have a yard, this is a great option. Also, if you compost at home and don’t have a way to use the compost material, community garderners would be happy to take that off your hands.
