Green Business Profile Wednesday: Garden District

99200155_52564254eaAlong the 14th St. NW corridor near S st., you may have noticed two “Garden District” shops. One sells outdoor gardening supplies, while the other sells indoor gardening supplies. What you may not have noticed is that this locally owned gardening shop is also environmentally friendly.

Garden District was started by Joe Carmack in 2002. A George Washington University alum, Joe has studied landscape design and loves working in planting design and lighting for gardens. In 2008, he opened the second “indoor” Garden District at 14th and Church streets.

Garden District has a strict green business policy. All the plant care products they sell are organic and sustainable. Nearly all the products they sell are purchased locally. Their garbage is recycled through Waste Management, whose business recycling program is one of the best. Unsellable green goods or plants are donated to those in need. They’re even working to reduce their paper dependence by only printing on both sides whenever possible.

If you want to join Garden District in their green pursuits, they invite you to bring back plastic containers so they can be returned to suppliers for reuse. They also encourage you to reuse plastic shopping bags and cardboard trays when you come back to shop, rather than taking new ones.
