Summer can be hot in DC, really hot. So let’s not get fooled by this pleasant weather and be prepared to cool ourselves when needed. This week I would like to spend more time discussing how to stay cool while lowering energy bills and pollution output by taking a whole-house approach to cooling.
When temperatures are rising, most of us run for the thermostat, but cooling your rooms can be costly, not to mention the negative impact on the environment. So here are some tips that will help you to keep your head cool, your pocket full, and Mother Earth happy:
- Keep the doors closed. Cool only the rooms that you are in. Switch off, or at least lower the A/C when you are not home.
- Check your windows. Close any gaps, leeks. Change old windows into windows with double glazing and spectrally selective coatings that reduce heat gain. Keep your blinds and curtains closed.
- If your air conditioner is old, consider purchasing a new, energy-efficient model. Place your room air conditioner on the north side of the house. A unit operating in the shade uses as much as 10% less electricity than the same one operating in the sun.
- Use fans. They help to spread cool air and lower the overall temperature.
- Consider painting your roof white or planting a green roof – that will help keep the temperature inside down.
Starting off with these tips will help you stay cool and save extra cash for summer fun. Enjoy!
