It is hard to find people who don’t like traveling. Traveling gives us opportunities to see new places, to make new friends, to broaden our horizons and to escape from every day routine. With our current economic situation, some of us might have been forced to cut our vacation short and eliminate some destinations due to our budgets. But no matter how far or close you are going this summer these tips will help you to reduce the environmental impact of your trip.
- Rail is probable the most earth friendly alternative to road and air travel. If you must fly, off-set your flight via one of the many online carbon calculators.
- After arriving at your destination, avoid renting a car if possible and use public transportation, rent a bike and walk – there is a greater chance you’ll see more this way than being stuck in a rental car in traffic.
- Treat your hotel room as you treat your home. Switch off the lights when exiting, use towels and sheets more than once, conserve water and energy.
- Use your own toiletries – making miniature soups and shampoo bottles consumes a lot of energy, and produces lots of waste.
- Support local shops. Buy souvenirs from local crafters.
