Our Happy Hippo is in Wisconsin

3423982255_4f81763ef9The National Zoo’s resident hippo for 28 years stepped into his special traveling container Monday night and departed for his new home at the Milwaukee County Zoo in Wisconsin.

For several months, the National Zoo prepared Happy the hippo for his journey by leaving the container in his enclosure and practicing entering and exiting the container. Late in the evening on Monday, September 28, Zoo staff carefully escorted Happy into the container one final time forĀ  a plane trip bound for Milwaukee.

Happy will be joining two female hippos in his new zoo. He previously lived alone in the elephant enclosure. As the National Zoo works to significantly expand the elephant exhibit, they had to find a new home that would give Happy the space and companionship he deserved.

Read all about Happy’s move and see video of him on the National Zoo’s website.
