Cash for carpooling? Getting commuters to go green as they earn some green is the purpose of the ‘Pool Rewards program launched last week by Commuter Connections.
A program of the National Capital Region Transportation Planning Board at the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments, Commuter Connections is hoping to alleviate traffic and pollution by incenting carpoolers in three of the metro area’s most congested corridors.
The three-month pilot program offers a cash incentive of one dollar each way to carpoolers traveling both ways on any of the following routes during the morning and evening rush hours: I-395 from the District across the 14th St. Bridge into northern Virginia, the Capital Beltway from Bethesda to Tysons Corner, and the Beltway from the Baltimore-Washington Parkway to I-270.
‘Pool Rewards is modeled on Atlanta’s successful Cash for Commuters program, which coaxed more than 29,000 drivers out of their cars by the end of its first five years, saving 32.8 million vehicle miles traveled. In addition, 64 percent of participants continue to use commuting alternatives at least once per week, now that the cash reward program has ended.
OK, so ‘Pool Rewards only offers a dollar each way. Not even enough for a coffee – let alone a latte – these days, but better than nothing nonetheless. Although an extra $10 per week won’t make anyone rich, it just may help commuters be more aware of the benefits to the environment and their health (less pollution and less stress).
Funded by the District, Maryland, Virginia and U.S. Departments of Transportation, Commuter Connections promotes ridesharing and other alternatives to drive-alone commuting, provides ridematching for carpools and vanpools, and offers the free Guaranteed Ride Home program (for unexpected emergencies).
