  • Find a Way to Green Your Holiday

    11 Nov 2009 | Daiva Kacenauskaite

Every year I scorn at Christmas tunes being played at malls, stores or even radios way before Thanksgiving. This year, when I went to CVS to buy the last minute Halloween candy, I was not surprised to see boxes and boxes of candy canes waiting to replace Halloween treats.

I understand that in these economically hard times, retailers are doing everything to persuade the reluctant shoppers that holiday season will not be as cheery and bright if they won’t spend crazy amounts of money on gifts and parties. However, we all know that it’s not these things that make the holiday season special; it’s being with the loved ones what really counts.

So this year I invite all of you to make your holidays more special and less commercial:

    • Don’t skip over Thanksgiving.  Thanksgiving is one holiday that brings people of all religions to celebrate a day together.  Take time to thank the

  • Reuse Autumn Leaves

    06 Nov 2009 | Brandon Fuller

The Fall has definitely arrived. This means apple cider, pumpkin pie, acorn squash, cooler weather and, of course, thousands of falling leaves.

Leaves may be beautiful when they’re turning bright orange, yellow and red, but the beauty wears off when they’re covering your lawn. Is there a way to reuse these leaves rather than bundle them up and send them to the dump? Yes.

According to Sustainityourself.blogspot.com, leaves can have a second life all over your yard if you know how to use them.

First, simply mow over the leaves with your lawn mower. Dicing up the leaves and allowing them to decompose into your yard preserves their nutrients and feeds the lawn for the Spring.

Second, rake up leaves into a ring around the base of your trees. The leaves will protect the tree from freezing Winter temperatures and will feed the roots as …

  • Green Living Tip: Green Lighting

    05 Nov 2009 | Daiva Kacenauskaite

As leaves fall, temperatures drop and days become shorter and shorter, we try to prolong our days by artificial lighting. It is proven, that light can make a big impact on how we feel, but it is also important to remember that the way we illuminate our spaces can also make a big impact on the environment. So to make your life brighter and greener, follow these tips:

    • Replace all incandescent light bulbs with fluorescent bulbs (compact fluorescent lights CFLs). CFLs cost a bit more than an incandescent, but use about a quarter as much energy and last many times longer (usually around 10,000 hours). It is estimated that a CFL pays for its higher price after about 500 hours of use. After that, it’s money in your pocket.

  • Government Eco-Action Mon.: Commuter Connections’ ‘Pool Rewards Offers Cash to Carpoolers

    02 Nov 2009 | Cynthia Bosnian

Cash for carpooling? Getting commuters to go green as they earn some green is the purpose of the ‘Pool Rewards program launched last week by Commuter Connections.

A program of the National Capital Region Transportation Planning Board at the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments, Commuter Connections is hoping to alleviate traffic and pollution by incenting carpoolers in three of the metro area’s most congested corridors.

The three-month pilot program offers a cash incentive of one dollar each way to carpoolers traveling both ways on any of the following routes during the morning and evening rush hours: I-395 from the District across the 14th St. Bridge into northern Virginia, the Capital Beltway from Bethesda to Tysons Corner, and the Beltway from the Baltimore-Washington Parkway to I-270.

‘Pool Rewards is modeled on Atlanta’s successful Cash for Commuters program, which coaxed more than …

  • Organic Recipe Friday: Tatsoi

    30 Oct 2009 | Gaby

    Almost Too Pretty to Eat
I went to my favorite farmer’s market last weekend with one thing on my mind: apples. Well, two if you count apple cider. What can only be described as a very thirsty woman snatched up the last half dozen bottles of apple cider but there were hundreds of apples left. After I selected a dozen, I surveyed the other offerings. I couldn’t resist the petite butternut squash, the bright green pea shoots or the gorgeous and massive head of tatsoi, a not-too-distant relation of bok choy but with thinner stems and darker leaves, and it grows in the shape of a rosette, not a compact head.

I then laid eyes on a box of romanesco cauliflowers, undeniably the most beautiful (and unreal) vegetables I’ve ever seen. Light lime green and covered in conical shapes with a …

Tip of the Day - Friday

Lower your thermostat in the winter. Raise it in the summer. Wearing a sweater in the winter and short sleeves in the summer saves energy and reduces pollution.
