The Federal government’s “Cash 4 Clunkers” campaign was a big hit with Americans looking to dump old fuel hogs in exchange for efficient new cars. Congress has debated extending the trade-in program to apply to appliances as well. This would mean anyone suffering with high utility bills because of old refrigerators could afford to replace them. The first wave of money from the stimulus bill has arrived for Metro. The $17.7 million has already been allocated to track improvements, chemical detection systems, fare machine upgrades and a new Metro sales center.
This is a drop in the bucket for Metro’s stimulus expectations. A full $200 million was initially dedicated to public transportation improvements in DC. Applications for the remaining funds are currently being reviewed and finalized.
